Windows Monitor Reset Guide

Reset monitor numbering by clearing graphics driver registry entries.

⚠️ Warning: Always backup registry entries before deletion.


Steps

1. Prepare

  • Disconnect all monitors except your desired monitor #1

  • Works best on desktop computers

2. Backup Registry

  1. Press Windows + R, type regedit, press Enter

  2. Export these locations (right-click → Export):

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration

    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Connectivity

3. Delete Registry Entries

  1. Delete both registry locations above (right-click → Delete)

  2. Close Registry Editor

4. Restart

  1. Shut down computer completely

  2. Boot with only monitor #1 connected

  3. Wait for Windows to detect the monitor

5. Reconnect Monitors

  1. Connect additional monitors one at a time

  2. Each will be numbered sequentially (monitor #2, #3, etc.)

6. Verify

  • Check "Display settings" to confirm proper numbering

Recovery

If something goes wrong, restore the exported registry files by double-clicking them.
