Reset monitor numbering by clearing graphics driver registry entries.
⚠️ Warning: Always backup registry entries before deletion.
Steps
1. Prepare
Disconnect all monitors except your desired monitor #1
Works best on desktop computers
2. Backup Registry
Press
Windows + R
, typeregedit
, press EnterExport these locations (right-click → Export):
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Connectivity
3. Delete Registry Entries
Delete both registry locations above (right-click → Delete)
Close Registry Editor
4. Restart
Shut down computer completely
Boot with only monitor #1 connected
Wait for Windows to detect the monitor
5. Reconnect Monitors
Connect additional monitors one at a time
Each will be numbered sequentially (monitor #2, #3, etc.)
6. Verify
Check "Display settings" to confirm proper numbering
Recovery
If something goes wrong, restore the exported registry files by double-clicking them.
